Established in 2019, Orchestra NorthWest is the region’s only symphony orchestra, comprised of some of the most talented amateur instrumentalists from Derry, Strabane, Donegal and beyond. 

Managed by the Allegri arts organisation, the orchestra has become firmly embedded in the cultural life of the city and district since its inception, presenting a wonderful variety of programmes with rich and varied programmes, Memorable previous performances include Fauré’s Requiem, the Christmas classics The Snowman and The Nutcracker, popular music from stage and screen as well as collaborations with the Allegri family of choirs, and a highlight in 2023 was when the orchestra performed with Arrival From Sweden: The Music of ABBA to an audience of over 3000 people in an open-air concert at Ebrington Square. 

This month, music lovers are invited to experience an exhilarating programme of classical and cinematic masterpieces.  

First on the programme is Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5, a quintessential piece of Romantic orchestral music, celebrated for its emotional depth and intricate melodies. Orchestra NorthWest will bring this symphonic masterpiece to life, inviting the audience to experience its timeless beauty.  

The concert will also feature Ravel’s captivating Boléro, a perennial favorite among audiences and made famous by Torvill and Dean’s 1984 Olympics routine in Sarajevo.  

The third piece will be a special treat for film music enthusiasts: Zimmer’s Interstellar Suite. Composed for Christopher Nolan’s acclaimed film Interstellar, Hans Zimmer’s score is both expansive and intimate, echoing the film’s epic exploration of space and time, and will transport audiences to the far reaches of the cosmos with its lush, evocative soundscapes and dramatic motifs. 

Orchestra NorthWest’s Autumn Concert promises to be a wonderful event, blending classical mastery with an innovative contemporary composition. Artistic Director of Orchestra NorthWest Maurice Kelly comments, “We are delighted to be back performing in the stunning surroundings of the Guildhall. The orchestra will deliver an evening of musical excellence that promises to resonate with both new listeners and seasoned aficionados. We are so fortunate to have an abundance of very fine players with considerable experience playing works that local people of all ages can enjoy.”
