Ed Hall - The History of Banners

The Playhouse, 5-7 Artillery St, Derry / Londonderry, Derry / Londonderry, BT48 6RG
Ed Hall - Banner Maker

About

Ed Hall is a legend in the world of banner making and he is coming to The Playhouse to talk about his journey.

A banner maker and trade unionist for the best part of 40 years, Eds' work shot to artistic fame as a collaborator with Jeremy Deller in 1999.

His banners have given visibility and voice to social issues as they arise, and his passion for symbolising justice and activism are evident in his works.

He will discuss the skill and craft of his work, explore his interest in banner making in Northern Ireland, and share his knowledge of how banners have been used since the 14th century and their vital presence in protests today.

He will also discuss the many exciting artistic collaborations he has worked on, including his Jeremy Deller collaborations including 'Folk Archive', 2005 and 'Procession' in 2009.

Ed joins us as a collaborator on 'The Triumph of Music', an event in Derry in Spring 2025 and this talk marks his first visit to Northern Ireland.
