About

The Ignite Project CIC is proud to present this amateur youth production of Sweeney Todd : The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.

After a spectacular run of Footloose the Musical last Summer in the Millennium Forum, The Ignite Project are back with the deliciously vengeful story of Sweeney Todd.

Sweeney Todd is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by Hugh Wheeler. Sweeney Todd opened on Broadway in 1979 and in the West End in 1980. The show won the Tony Award for Best New Musical and the Olivier Award for Best New Musical after receiving huge acclaim from critics on both sides of the Atlantic.

Sweeney Todd is the legendary tale of a barber who returns from wrongful imprisonment to 1840s London, bent on revenge for the rape and death of his wife.

In the Victorian London, the barber Benjamin Barker is married to the gorgeous Lucy and they have a lovely child, Johanna. The beauty of Lucy attracts the attention of the corrupt Judge Turpin, who falsely accuses the barber of a crime that he did not commit and abuses Lucy later after gaining custody of her. After fifteen years in exile, Benjamin returns to London under the new identity of Sweeney Todd, seeking revenge against Turpin. He meets the widow Mrs. Lovett who is the owner of a meat pie shop who tells him that Lucy swallowed arsenic many years ago, and Turpin assigned himself tutor of Johanna. He opens a barber shop above her store, initiating a crime rampage against those who made him suffer and lose his beloved family. Eventually Todd’s revenge becomes directed at all mankind that has wronged him which makes this musical into a gory and thrilling tale.

This amateur production is brought to you by The Ignite Project CIC with a cast of young performers from across the North West.
