About
*The Wilson Home is currently closed at Ulster American Folk Park*
In the foothills of the Sperrin Mountains at Dergalt can be found the house from which a young man called James Wilson left in 1807. Just over a century later his grandson, ‘Woodrow’ was to become the most powerful man in James’ adopted country, serving as 28th President of the United States from 1912 to 1921.
The house in itself is intrinsically interesting for this prestigious connection and also because it typifies the Ulster emigrant’s home. In the 18th century and 19th century, a whitewashed building such as this, set against a green and brown background was for most emigrants their last and often enduring memory of Ireland.
