Learmount Forest covers 118 hectares of the foothills at the northern face of the Sperrin Mountains. Bought by Forest Service at the end of WWII it boasts a mixture of pine and deciduous trees and a wide variety of habitats. Roads and paths offer over 4kms of trails that rise 200m up from the banks of the River Faughan on the slopes of Meeny Hill. Parts may be considered steep. An interesting features of the forest , apart from its beauty and tranquillity, is the castle. This was built in 1830 as an extension of an older building erected by a Captain Montgomery around 1710 .The castle was used at one time by Ashleigh House Girls' School, Belfast (during the war) and then by the Youth Hostel Association. Interpretation is available on site.
Learmount Forest is a working forest environment and may be subject to diversion and closure from time to time. Pay attention to safety signage. Up to date information is available on the Forest Service web site – https://www.nidirect.gov.uk/articles/learmount-forest
